Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, Pilates is a system of exercises which focus on core strength, stability and mobility.
Pilates is suitable for a wide range of people, from beginners to professional athletes, pregnant women and seniors. The Pilates system treats the body as a whole. It emphasizes a mind/body connection, skeletal alignment, active breathing techniques, coordination, and balance. With consistent practice, clients become more flexible, build up muscle without adding bulk, improve joint mobility and boost energy levels. Intensity is increased over time as the body conditions and adapts to the exercises.
The exercises can be performed alone on the mat and with specialized apparatuses: the reformer, cadillac/tower, chair, and barrels. The apparatuses provide gentle spring resistance, which increases strength, facilitates movement, and creates a stable environment.
